Description: The programme aims to deliver a permanent long term management solution for stocks of civil plutonium, following consultation on options undertaken in February 2011. The preferred option is to build manufacturing facilities to convert the plutonium into Mixed Oxide (MOX) fuel and to immobilise and make safe the plutonium not suitable for reuse. In the intervening period, plutonium stocks are safely and securely stored, including overseas owned plutonium in the UK (to which we are in the process of taking title).
